Leisure Courses

Our leisure course is suitable for all abilities and no previous experience or knowledge is required. If you have never picked up a hammer or a needle this is the one for you. Already have some experience? Come along and add valuable skills to your repertoire.

The courses are booked in five week blocks, many of my students have been booking continuously for the past 4 years! If you wish to continue after your initial course you are more than welcome to do so and each consecutive block will build your knowledge.

The aim of the courses is to develop your creative skills and to discover the basic & further principles of traditional and modern upholstery. Class sizes are friendly and intimate. With a maximum of just 6 students you will have plenty of opportunity with the tutor.

For all courses you should bring along a small upholstered item as your first project, such as a dining chair, drop-in seat or footstool. Projects should be easily transportable as storage is not available at the studio. You will also most likely want to continue your project at home with your new found skills.

Larger pieces of furniture can be considered but will need to be discussed beforehand as they will definitely take longer than five weeks. Please be aware that fabric sometimes hides a lot, so your project may need more time and work than is initially visible.

You will choose and supply your own materials & fabrics, there are tools to use in the studio. We have tool kits & materials available to purchase, so you may work on your project at home.

The 5 week block costs just £200.00 per student, (as mentioned does not include fabric, trim, or materials). Courses are payable in advance and your booking will be confirmed via email. More than one course may be booked at a time for larger or varied projects.

E-vouchers may be purchased in 5 week blocks, or tailored to your requirements for longer projects. Tool kits can also be added to your gift purchase if you wish.

Vouchers are valid for 6 months from purchase date. Please use the contact form to request one.

Passementerie workshop. Saturday 17th February 2024.

Passementerie workshop with guest tutor Elizabeth Ashdown.

Passementerie is the art of creating decorative ribbons, trimmings, braids, cords and fringes. Whether you’re interested in interior design, accessories, fashion design, or fine art, this workshop will teach you the introductory passementerie weaving skills you need to create your own fabulous hand woven designs bursting with colour, texture and pattern.

Join us for a captivating journey into the world of Passementerie Sussex Upholstery! Discover the intricate art of creating exquisite trimmings and decorative cords that add a touch of elegance to upholstery and furnishings. Renowned Passementerie artist Elizabeth Ashdown will guide you through the techniques, history, and creative possibilities oft his time-honoured craft.

One of only a few hand Passementerie artists working in the UK today,  Elizabeth combines traditional and endangered craft skills with a contemporary aesthetic in order to create intriguing, energetic and playful art works. Working from her studio in London, Elizabeth creates work for a diverse range of clients including creating hand woven, bespoke artwork commissions for private collectors, to creating artworks for exhibitions and weaving bespoke passementerie lengths. Elizabeth has exhibited her Passementerie artworks both nationally and internationally.

During this immersive workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to work with provided materials and looms to craft your own beautiful Passementerie pieces.

You will create 2 different hand woven contemporary Passementerie designs, each design exploring a different hand technique. For this workshop, you will be learning how to create Passementerie on a frame loom. Also, you will learn how to hand spin your own cords to use within your weaving.

No prior experience of weaving is required.
